Background of the Study
Social media has emerged as a powerful platform for gauging public opinion and sentiment, particularly regarding issues that affect large communities. In the context of university admissions, social media analysis provides an invaluable lens through which to understand the perceptions, expectations, and concerns of prospective students and their families. At Bayero University in Kano, analyzing social media sentiments related to the admission process can reveal insights into the fairness, transparency, and effectiveness of current practices (Sani, 2023). Digital sentiment analysis employs natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning techniques to process large volumes of user-generated content from platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. These techniques enable the categorization of opinions into positive, negative, and neutral sentiments, and allow for the identification of recurring themes and issues. The dynamic and interactive nature of social media means that sentiments can evolve rapidly, providing real-time feedback that can inform administrative strategies and policy adjustments (Abdullahi, 2024). Moreover, understanding these sentiments is critical for improving the university’s public image, as negative perceptions can have far-reaching consequences for enrollment and institutional reputation. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis of social media sentiments regarding the admission processes at Bayero University, examining factors such as application transparency, responsiveness of the admission system, and overall satisfaction with the process. By integrating data from various social media channels and employing advanced sentiment analysis algorithms, the research seeks to provide actionable recommendations for enhancing the admission experience and addressing areas of public concern. The findings will contribute to a broader understanding of how digital feedback can be used to improve university policies and practices in a rapidly evolving digital landscape (Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
The admission process at Bayero University has long been a subject of public debate, with concerns ranging from perceived unfairness to bureaucratic inefficiencies. Traditional feedback mechanisms, such as surveys and formal complaints, often fail to capture the full spectrum of opinions and sentiments expressed by prospective students and their families (Ibrahim, 2023). Social media, however, offers a rich source of unfiltered feedback, yet this data remains largely untapped by university administrators. The lack of systematic analysis of social media sentiments means that critical issues—such as delays in processing applications, inconsistencies in admission criteria, and poor communication—may go unaddressed. Furthermore, negative sentiments expressed online can damage the university’s reputation and deter potential applicants. This study seeks to bridge this gap by applying sentiment analysis techniques to social media data to uncover underlying public perceptions of the admission process. The research will identify dominant themes in user feedback, quantify sentiment polarity, and evaluate the overall satisfaction with the university’s admission practices. By doing so, the study aims to provide a detailed picture of the strengths and weaknesses of the current system and offer recommendations for improvement. The goal is to ensure that the university’s admission process becomes more transparent, responsive, and aligned with the expectations of its stakeholders (Udo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To analyze social media sentiments regarding Bayero University’s admission process.

  • To identify key areas of concern and satisfaction among prospective students and their families.

  • To propose actionable recommendations for improving the admission process based on sentiment analysis.

Research Questions:

  • What are the predominant sentiments expressed about the university admission process on social media?

  • Which aspects of the admission process generate the most positive or negative feedback?

  • How can the findings from sentiment analysis be used to enhance admission practices?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it harnesses the power of social media sentiment analysis to provide deep insights into public perceptions of the admission process at Bayero University. The findings will help university administrators identify and address areas of concern, thereby improving transparency, fairness, and overall applicant satisfaction. The research offers a model for using digital feedback to drive policy improvements in higher education.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to the analysis of social media sentiments on the admission process at Bayero University, Kano, Kano State, and does not extend to other universities or feedback channels.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Sentiment Analysis: The computational process of identifying and categorizing opinions expressed in text.

  • University Admission Process: The procedures and criteria used to select and enroll students in a university.

  • Social Media Sentiments: The attitudes and opinions expressed by users on social media platforms.
